Vengance!

[ curtain opens on a unset stage ghostly dancers will be waiting on stage cloaked in black the stage is lit in a red wash and a blue spotlight illuminates the main character Demitri curled up in center stage music begins to play ( Sleep by My Chemical Romance) ]

Demitri: some say now suffer all the children

And walk away a savior

Or a madman and polluted

From gutter institutions

For what I’ve done

[ at this moment the dancers throw off their cloaks and begin waltzing and dancing oddly ]

a drink for the horror that I’m in

for the good guys and the bad guys

for the monsters that I’ve been

[the dancers clear the stage by this time Demitri has moved in front of the curtain line and the curtain closes to half , just enough so that the red wash seeps through into the auditorium but that no one sees the stage behind being set the spotlight shines on him as he delivers his monologue]

Demitri: this is a story of loss and sorrow sometimes, you get to a place where you cant turn back , you have to see your course through, we don’t choose who we are , we don’t choose , who we love, we cant choose when we die, sometimes we do terrible things for the joy of it but sometimes we act out of response to situations where the circumstances leave us only one avenue and the choice is made for us, I loved another with all my heart and I watched as he was ripped from my life I never made the choice to do the terrible things I’ve done, people say that god controls all things , well god must not have heard my prayers, some say god is dead, well maybe that is true and maybe it isn’t but god must have called in sick that day because he couldn’t save me from the hell I’m sentenced to that was forged by the hands of man.

[a full black out blankets the auditorium and Dimitri disappears from the stage the curtain opens up on the halls of a high school Dimitri walks down the hall entering from stage right holding hands with his boyfriend Derek standing at the other end of the hall is a group of rednecks spitting dip into bottles leaning up against the lockers Derek and Dimitri stop at a locker in the middle of the hall]

Derek: I cant believe I have three tests today

Dimitri: its high school, testing is a given

Derek: not when you only have two classes in a day

Dimitri: well maybe this is karma telling you that you shouldn’t consign yourself to breezing through life, your always looking on the dim side of things , your glass is definitely half FULL

Derek: says the boy with a full glass

[ the rednecks walk by muttering hate speech and casually run into Derek slamming him against his locker, and causing him to spill his coffee all over himself]

Josh: oops my bad hope I didn’t ruin your designer shoes there pretty boy

Derek: go to hell

Jeremy: ooh look whos got all big and bad, you are so lucky this school has an S.R.O. or I would beat your ass

Derek: bring it on tough guy anytime anyplace

[The principle walks in and notices the boys getting in each others face]

Principle: alright now break it up, this is a school not a bar I wont have this disruption in my hallway now get to class, [ looking at Derek] you are treading on thin ice one more time I see you getting in anybody’s way or causing disruption and you are gonna be expelled, are you hearing me

Derek: They started this, I’ve never done anything wrong, I never start anything, why am I always the one that gets the blame when they get away free

Principal: a likely story I know your kind, nothing but foul mouthed little snots who don’t know their heads from a hole in the ground, now you get to class and don’t stir up anymore trouble than your already in

Derek: what you think I did this mess to myself, they slammed me up against a locker aren’t you going to punish them

Principle: now that’s enough, you little trouble maker, now you stop slandering my upstanding athletes, riling them up before a game, get to class

[ the bell rings and the hallway clears blackout scene change]

Scene 2

[ lights come up on a classroom all of the rednecks sitting in a circle surrounding Derek as he tries to get his homework done]

Bradley: well lookey here, little queer boy is writing love letters to his boyfriend, isn’t that sweet Jesse?

Jesse: sure is, Bradley, I think we should mail this, [ folds the paper into a paper airplane and hurls it across the room] now go pick it up

Derek: that was my homework you asshole [ he goes to pick up the paper and josh kicks him into the desk Derek gets up and leaps at the group and a fight ensues as the teacher walks in with the S.R.O. and breaks it all up]

Teacher: that’s it your going to the office right now, this school maintains a zero tolerance violence policy

[ the scene changes to the principal’s office and all the boys are gathered in front of his desk]

Principal: all right now tell me who started this

Derek: it started how it always starts, that bunch of degenerates assaulted me and I defended myself,

Principal: is that so

Derek: Jesse kicked me into a desk, I have witnesses

Principal: that’s enough, josh why don’t you tell me what really happened

Josh: well you see Principal Whitaker, Derek here dropped his paper and when he went to pick it up he tripped over his chair leg and fell, and Jesse tried to help him up and Derek just flew at him in a blind rage

Principal: now that I believe, alright boys yall can go ahead back to class, don’t let Mrs. Rimbaugher work you to hard, gotta keep your head in the game if were gonna win on Friday

Derek: That’s bullshit, you didn’t even give me a chance to call up my witnesses

Principal: you think its not fair, well let me clue you in to something, this is my school and I run things, your expelled, we don’t want your kind around here anyway, bunch of sinful liars, the lot of you, if it were up to me, they would line all the faggots up and shoot them, now, clean out your locker and get the hell out of my school

Derek: the school board will be hearing about this

Scene 3

[ Derek walks home from school and goes up to his mailbox, in it he finds a note with the words “ this aint over, your dead meat queer” on it, he tears it up and goes inside the lights dim and suddenly there is a rock thrown through the window, Derek goes outside to investigate it, he walks over to the window to look at it and sees the damage then from behind he is hit over the head with a pipe he hits the ground the boys grab his legs and drag him across the lawn he screams loudly but to no avail they chain him to the back of a pickup truck and drag him, the auditorium goes dark, curtain reopens on a dimly lit stage the boys gathered around a crumpled up Derek screaming in pain as they kick him and beat him]

Jesse: you aint so tough now boy are you

Jeremy: thought you was gonna kick my ass, lets see you do it [ he kneels down to get to eye level with Derek] come on boy stand up and fight like a man, if you’re a man at all that is , whats the matter, you gonna cry , you praying that mommy will make it all better, come on stand up and show me what you got , ill even give you the first shot free, come on , right there on the chin, lets see what you’ve got, nothing, your weak and that’s why you’re a loser

Bradley: lets string him up boys

Josh: tie that faggot up to the tree

Jeremy: we didn’t bring any rope

Josh: fuck it lets use barbed wire

[ they sit him up against the tree bruised and battered and tie his hands behind him, they then take barbed wire and wrap it around him and pull it taught allowing the sharp barbs to cut deeply into his skin]

Jeremy: you’re a piece of livestock, and what do we do to live stock, we brand it

[he takes his ring off and holds it to the flame of his cigarette lighter, and then presses it to Derek’s raw flesh he gasps for air , all the scream in his voice is gone]

Alright boys let’s get the fuck out of here, I got diner waiting on me

Scene 4

[ the paramedics arrive and remove Derek from the tree Dimitri arrives on the scene pulling up in the back of the police car he rushes out to see Derek who is clinging onto life]

Paramedic: im sorry sir you can’t go past the tape

Dimitri: get the Fuck out of my way

[he hops into the ambulance with Derek as they load him in]

Dimitri: your gonna be okay, I wont let anything happen to you

[black out, scene changes to a hospital Derek has been questioned by the police reguarding who did it he tells them the story and then passes out they hook him up to life support]

Police officer: Dimitri can I talk to you for a minute

Dimitri: whats going on

Police Officer: do you have any idea who could have done this to Derek

Dimitri: are you serious, he just told you all the people who did it

Police Officer: its not something those boys would do besides

Dimitri: besides what, why would Derek lie about who did these awful things to him, you listen to me, if Derek says they did it , then they did it, they have been violent to him before, its not out of character , now go do your job and arrest them for attempted murder

Police Officer: hes lost a lot of blood, he’s probably delirious

Dimitri: after all of this and your still not going to listen to him

Police Officer: look its my call, their word against his, will never stand up in court, besides, I have a lot of money riding on Fridays game and im not letting the dillusional ranting of a queer who is too far gone to even hold his head up ruin this for me, we will have detectives investigate and try to substantiate his claim but as of now im putting this under unsolved crimes

[the officer leaves and the doctor comes in and attempts to turn off the life support machine]

Dimitri: what are you doing

Doctor: im sorry theres nothing more we can do for him

Dimitri: what are you talking about he was just plugged up to the machine an hour ago he can be treated

Doctor: He needs over three quarts of blood

Dimitri: So get it, it shouldn’t be too awful hard to find they have freezers full of blood in the back

Doctor: there is a blood shortage as is, were not going to waste blood on someone who is high risk

Dimitri: waste blood? high risk? what are you talking about?

Doctor: look , im not trying to be mean here, but your type, people like you , are at a higher risk of being infected by HIV were not going to waste blood on someone who could be infected

Dimitri: [slamming the doctor up against the wall] NO YOU LISTEN, you see him lying there in the hospital bed over there, that is the only person in this world that matters to me, Now you do everything you can for him or I will make sure that he gets some of your blood understand

[the doctor backs away and walks out of the room, Dimitri sits in the chair at the foot of the hospital bed and prays silently black out]

Scene 5

[ the curtain reopens after a five to ten minute intermission, back at the hospital, they have managed to pull Derek out of his coma but his condition is still critical though he is able to have limited movement , he can speak]

Derek: you know they’re gonna get away with this don’t you

Dimitri: not if I have anything to do with it

Derek: ( crying) but you don’t , its nothing we can change, as long as there are people with hate in their hearts , people like them will get away with murder

Dimitri: they aren’t the only ones with hate in their hearts now, I don’t care what they do , how hard they try, they wont keep me from testifying , and if it takes everything in me, I’m gonna makes sure you get better and make sure you can tell what happened, even if we have to video tape your testimony, as long as there is still breath in my lungs, I’m gonna make damn sure they won’t get away with this

Derek: Dimitri, we both know that by the time this goes to court I won’t be breathing anymore

Dimitri: your gonna get better, I’m not going to give up on you, your everything to me

Derek: I never deserved to have someone as great as you in my life, and if I knew then that I was going to die for being with you, I wouldn’t change anything, I just wish I wouldn’t have lived long enough to watch you cry over someone as meaningless as me

Dimitri: I don’t regret a single moment of my life since you came into it, I just wish it had been me, instead of you

Derek: it was meant to be, I wish you wouldn’t have had to see me like this though, I guess this is god’s way of saying that I never deserved to be with someone like you

[Cancer by My Chemical Romance begins to play]

Derek: Turn away

If you could get me a drink,

Of water cause my lips are chapped and faded

Help her gather all my things

And bury me in all my favorite colors

Dimitri: If you were trying to break my heart, you succeeded, im not giving up on you, don’t give up on yourself, I will see you tomorrow, I have to go talk to the police now, I love you [they kiss briefly, Dimitri exits stage left, black out]

Scene 6

[ lights come up again on the street alleyway Dimitri is walking alone when there are voices behind him then he sees at the end of the alleyway Jeremy, Josh, Bradley and Jesse waiting menacingly]

Jesse: there he is

Dimitri: what do you want from me

Jeremy: we know your gonna try to get us sent to jail

Josh: try being the operative word

[ they grab him as he trys to walk on by and press him up to the wall]

Dimitri: if you think you can intimidate me, your sorely mistaken, you’ll have to kill me to keep my mouth shut

[Josh punches him in the face]

Josh: that was a warning, I will kill you if I have to, save yourself the trouble and stay quiet, besides, it’s not like you can do anything , my dads the sheriff what are the odds that anyone in this town is going to convict the son of a sheriff for such a heinous crime

[a policeman shines his light down the alley way and the boys split Dimitri drops to the ground and the policeman approaches]

Policeman: whats going on here

Dimitri: like you give a damn

Policeman: are you doing drugs boy?

Dimitri: NO!

Policeman: what happened to your face

Dimitri: the same thing that happened to my boyfriend

Policeman: I think we need to take you downtown and get you checked out

[he goes downtown with the police officer the curtain closes scene changes]

[curtain reopens on the hospital ]

Dimitri: Derek Guess what

Doctor: I need to have a word with you in the hallway

Dimitri: just a minute I have news

Derek: what

Dimitri: arrests have been made and the indictment will be on Tuesday, trial is set for next Monday provided they get indicted, I told you they weren’t going to get away with this

Doctor: now come with me to the hallway

[they step out of the doorway]

Dimitri: how’s he doing

Doctor: it doesn’t look good, there’s a slow hemorage in his liver, he’s dying more and more by the minute, we’ve done all we can, but he would need a new liver, that his body might reject anyway, and because of the severity of his injuries we don’t know what else we might have missed and we can’t waste livers on patients in a compromised position like he is now, within two weeks he won’t be alive

Dimitri: I understand

[they step back into the room and the doctor leaves]

Dimitri: I think Im going to spend the night with you tonight like we used to, wont that be fun

Derek: I Know Dimitri, I may be in bad shape but my ears still work fine

Dimitri: I wont leave you alone

Derek: I want you to, go out and find someone else, someone who can love you like I never got the chance to, if there was one wish I have in my soul, its that you will be happy and Its impossible to be happy with me

Dimirti: how can you say that, you have made me the happiest person in the world, theres no one else for me in the world

Derek: well I don’t want you

Dimitri: you just say that because your trying to protect me, because your afraid, you love me, and I love you and until one of us drops dead were gonna be together

Derek: well that moment is swiftly approaching, just please leave and find someone else, because I cant let you stay here wasting your life as you watch me die

Dimitri: you just

Derek: JUST GO

Dimitri: [ music starts and my chemical romance’s “ I don’t love you” plays]

Well when you go

And maybe when you get back

I’ll be better off to find another way

And after all this time that you still owe

Your still a good for nothing, I don’t know

Derek: I hope you will come to understand after I’m gone

Dimitri: I don’t think I ever will, all I know, is that when you do leave, I will never be whole again

[black out scene change]

Scene 7

[ the curtain reopens to the hospital at night, the tape of Derek’s Testimony has been made and is sitting out on top of the table beside his bed, the lights are all dimmed to the point where you can barely see anything but illuminated enough so that it gives the feeling that there is a nightlight glowing from some unseen socket, from down in the auditorium, Jeremy, Jesse, Josh, and Bradley enter through the doors they are dressed in all black, black gloves and carrying black ski masks they meet in front of the portal to stage right]

Jeremy: all right, we know that those queers taped a confession

Jesse: I told you we should have finished the job when we had the chance

Josh: If it weren’t for that other faggot we wouldn’t be worrying, who else would care that Derek was missing, and come looking for him

Jesse: We have to take care of him now too

Josh: don’t worry, no one is going to believe him

Bradley: if no one is going to believe Dimitri then no one would believe Derek, so why do we have to even do this

Jeremy: you getting soft on us now?

Bradley: Hell No! I just don’t want to have to touch that faggot

Josh: We have to now, because he might get the jury’s sympathy

Jesse: he wont even live long enough to make it to trial

Jeremy: it doesn’t matter we have to steal the tape of his testimony or we could fry for this

Josh: we wouldn’t fry even if we do get convicted, my dads the sheriff, the worst we could get is seventeen years

Jesse: I Don’t Want to go to jail

Josh: then you better pull it together now huh?

Bradley: so whats the plan

Jeremy: No Blood, No screams, No Evidence

Josh: we get the tape one of you needs to be look out, meanwhile the other two of us will hold him down and keep his mouth shut and we pull out his IV and smother him

Bradley: why pull out the IV

Jesse: because stupid it makes it look like he pulled out his IV in his sleep and without that medicine he dies fast

Bradley: how long will that take?

Jeremy: im not sure could be a few minutes, could be half an hour, we just have to make sure there is no reason it should look like anything other than an accident or else the fingers all point to us

Bradley: what do we do about the cameras

Josh: we sneak into the basement where the security room is, we tap the wire that leads to the feed from room 203 which is his room, we record him sleeping and see the tossing and turning we loop it and play it on repeat, which is why as soon as Jesse gets the tape he has to get back down there and wait for the word to switch to regular feed once we’ve exited, which will be right as he flatlines on the E.K.G. after which we sneak out , you cut the repeat short, and it’s like we were never ever there and it’s open and shut from there on out

Jeremy: im telling you this now, if you get squeamish and think about leaving or fucking this up in any way, and you will be the next on the list

Bradley: okay

Josh: lets go to work then

Jesse: bout time, im freezing my balls off standing out here, allright , don’t forget to walkie me as soon as he starts to flatline and keep it on headset we make as little noise as possible

[ they split up and set about to perpetrating the devilish deed, they pull it off exactly as they planned it and they meet up back in front of the stage crouched down as if they came out of a window, the doctors enter franticly as the E.K.G Flatlines, they bring out the paddles and try to revive him but the head doctor, stops them and decides hes already gone, black out onstage, the boys walk out the same way they came as getting away with murder by papa roach begins to play ( full recording not karaoke)]

Scene 8

[there is another 5 to ten minute intermission for this part, the audience Is asked to go out into the lobby to attend Derek’s Funeral, which has been prepared five minutes prior to the conclusion of scene 7, the preacher opens the service with a statement ]

Preacher: it is with heavy hearts that we entrust Derek Reynolds body to the earth may Christ have mercy on his soul amen

[sarah gets up to deliver a statement]

Sarah: I knew Derek, and Dimitri, better than most, they were my friends and I know that Derek was not the type of person who deserved any of the horrible things that were done to him, I think he would have wanted me to sing this

[free bird begins to play , an abridged version without the enormous amount of guitars]

Sarah: if I leave here tomorrow

Would you still remember me

For im a speed traveling on now

There’s just too many places I’ve got to see

If I stay here with you, well, things just couldn’t be the same

Dimitri: I loved Derek with all of my soul and no one will ever know the immense pain I will forever carry in my heart due to his absence, we loved with a love that was deeper than the ocean, and stronger than the fiercest wind, and as we lay him to rest, I will watch a piece of me be lowered down with him, they say true love comes around only once in a lifetime, well Derek Reynolds, was that love for me, there will never be another like him, and we shall carry his memory with us always

[the crow and the butterfly by shinedown begins to play]

Dimitri: I painted your room at midnight

So I’d know yesterday was over

I put all your books on the top shelf

Even the one with the four leafed clover

Man im getting older

I took all your pictures off the wall

And wrapped them in news paper blankets

I haven’t slept in what seems like a century

And now I can barely breathe
